In '08, we used electromagnetic couplers to connect two independent shafts via very strong magnetic attraction, and we would reverse the polarity of said couplers to break the connection of the two shafts, allowing the one that was attached to the surgical tubing to spin on its own. There was no connection to the motors at all when we were firing.

That being said, I'm still not sure if we thought up of a way today to quick-release a winch.

Interesting, I was under the belief that the magnetic couplers were on the driven shaft...interesting.

I think the idea that's catching the most steam is the idea to use a shifter, and basically when we shift out, the shaft is allowed to spin freely.

Using a shifter. The only one I know about is the AndyMark one. This would require using a cim moter. Could we use this for dual purpose for the tension and the wench? They say using a servo is not as robust as using air to shift.

It says on the supershifter page that the shifting time is 1.5 -2 seconds with the servo, which, IMO is not good enough for our shooter. I know that having pneumatics on there if we're just using them to shift is some what of a setback or draw, but I think that it'll be well worth it to get a really nice shifter.

And I believe we can feed the double doozy gearbox into the transmission gearbox.
