My initial thought was clutches, but I can't tell if that's a shifter where the winch has been put on the shaft of the transmission itself. Hm...

It quite quiet when it releases. It could be either of them.

They are using a cable on a wench to pull the foot back. I be it is a manual release such as our wooden model.

They have an interesting drive and even more interesting mechanism to get their "hook" up.
